This multi-media art class will explore advanced methods and art techniques, art criticism and aesthetics, and museum and/or gallery experience and etiquette. This 12 week course will apply the elements and principles of design to a variety of media, such as drawing pencils, oil pastels, painting, and 3-D art works. Drawing assignments are often woven into the 12 week curriculum as a vehicle for further understanding and personal development. The students will also be given the opportunity to visit local attractions such as Fallingwater and the Carnegie Museum to critique artwork in its formal setting.
Ceiling Tile Project
Sometime around 2001 we started using the ceiling as our canvas. Typically this project has been exclusive to our Art Exploration students although I have let my 2-D students contribute to it from time to time. The objective is to have the students search paintings on the internet based on their personal tastes or focus. Originally, it was confined to only "master artists", but there is so much amazing imagery from newer contemporary, perhaps even "unknown" artists, that we opened up are search basis.
Although we have the students use a pre-existing painting as a source for their paintings, we encourage them to appropriate it however they wish; changing the colors, adding or subtracting images, etc... The objective of this project is to have them experiment with mixing paint to create particular colors, tints and shades, to produce a sophisticated painting upon completion.
The set back is that the finished piece is to be left behind at the Middle School.
Although students hate to leave their masterpieces behind I try to provide solace in the fact that their legacies will always be a part of their middle school experience!
